So it took me awhile to realize that Oxford weeks go from Sunday-Saturday, not Monday-Sunday, so posts will now go by that.
Our last two summatives from Hilary term were due at noon on Monday. After handing in these papers, the only work we have left is our theses. It was no surprise that a bunch of us ended up at the Exam Schools between 11:30-12, so we went for lunch at the Turf Tavern afterwards. A few of us then went to St. Cross for the rest of the afternoon to hang out and play pool and foosball.
A few months back when we started to plan our spring break trip, we bought tickets to see Avenue Q at the 'New Theatre' in Oxford for the first Monday night of Trinity term. Neil had seen it before and said a few of the jokes were changed to suit England. I recognized a change in "For Now" where instead of saying 'George Bush,' they said 'Justin Bieber.' Though I've had the soundtrack for about 6 years, seeing the show and all the 'dances' that accompanied the songs made everything so much better.
On Thursday we had an all-day session at the OII where everyone gave a short presentation about their thesis and got some feedback. It was a long day, but we had a good lunch break going out for dim sum. Since the weather had been absolutely terrible for the past week and it finally let up for a bit, after class we went to a pub with plenty of outdoor seating, and one of the younger professors joined us.
The usual Friday night dinner crew went to Turl Street Kitchen for dinner. As we were about to leave, two of our classmates walked in with some friends to get a drink, and we ended up joining in on their evening plans to go to the bar in Jesus College and then to Cowley, a neighborhood on the other side of town, for a house party. We never made it to the party and instead ended up at this weird Jamaican-themed pub before going to hang out in the MCR (grad student common room) of Keble College, which is super fancy with leather couches and wood-paneled walls.
On Saturday evening I went down to the university gym to take my swim test in order to join a boat club. We had to swim 2 laps of any stroke in a t-shirt and shorts, and then we had to swim a few meters fully submerged (as if we were trying to avoid getting hit by an oar). We then had to tread water for two minutes. I ended up in line next to a kid who was studying abroad from Colby. I signed up for the first group of swim tests and luckily ended up fairly close to the front of the line, so I didn't have to wait too long to get in the water. Later that night, I finally completed the first season (3 x 1.5 hour episodes) of Sherlock after having started the show back in January.
