England may have lost the war, but that didn't stop us from, in the words of our party host, celebrating "the fact that we WHOOPED those limey bastards back in the 18th century and won our independence" and "formally and ever so elegantly told them to go shove it."
Liz was heading back to Canada on Wednesday, so we went to Turl for dinner on Tuesday night.
We attempted to go to Turf Tavern after dinner, but that was too busy. So we went to Kings Arms (what we call KA), which was also too busy, so we ended up back at Balliol and chilled in the Megaron all evening.
Zander hosted a 4th of July party at his house on Wednesday. Finding patriotic decorations are easier when you live in a country with the same colors, but I think the stars and stripes plates and cups were ordered online. Though the grocery stores stock fireworks in November for Guy Fawkes Day, Zander was unable to find fireworks this time of year (but I happened to pass a store on July 5th that sold them...oh well).

I had a rowing outing on Thursday. We had to wait about half an hour for our cox to show up, but at least it was a beautiful day.
Josh, one of the first year OII Dphils, was headed home for the summer this weekend, so a bunch of us got together on Friday evening. We started out at the 3 Goats Head and then decided we wanted a change of scenery. We stopped at the Broad St. kebab van for dinner and headed to an outside table at the KA. Luckily we managed to finish our food before one of the KA staff spotted the styrofoam containers on our table and told us to throw them out. I think this was the first time I ever got carded at KA, possibly because I ordered right after a group of male American summer students. The pub was overrun with summer students and tours. One large group had taken a picture at a building across the street and then started yelling USA USA USA before entering the pub in mass and leaving promptly thereafter (but with enough time for the British boys to make fun of them for ordering half pints of Guinness).
